Educational courses “The Polish Language. Modules: Conversation. History. Country Studies "  are designed for beginners. Modern requirements for a foreign language learning determine the special role of the Cultural Linguistic Approach. It combines linguistics with country studies, and thus contributes to the effective formation of linguistic, communicative and sociocultural competencies. These competencies ensure free communication in various speech situations and areas of life.

The course program includes linguistic, historical and cultural components, provides the development of speaking skills and broadening of an active vocabulary. It also helps to  acquire  grammatical and syntactic systems of Polish through the learning communicative topics based on texts of sociocultural and regional studies subjects.

Participants will broaden the knowledge about Poland as a country, get acquainted with public speaking etiquette, the phenomena of political and public life, the features of historical and economic development and the system of state structure, and will find out about contemporary art and cultural attractions of the country. The systematic knowledge of history will help to see the place and role of Poland in the Globe History and World processes, and also  to understand the peculiarities of the national worldview and mentality.

At the end of the educational courses, students will be able to  use the gained knowledge and skills to communicate in many everyday situations, briefly justify and explain their views and intentions, see into the sociocultural realities and historical facts of Poland. The implementation of the Cultural Linguistic Approach encourages further self-education, promotes the motivation to learn the language, leads to enriching the linguistic picture of the world.

The purpose of the course is to master the basic level of Polish, phonetical, lexical and grammatical systems of the language, the formation of linguistic, communicative and sociocultural competencies based on socio-cultural and regional topic.

To realise this purpose is to solve the following tasks:

Mastering and systematization of knowledge on:

• Grammar, lexical and stylistic norms of the Polish language;
• Semantic and syntactic features of the vocabulary in accordance with the spheres and forms of communication;
• The principles of verbal communication and the features of public speaking etiquette in various areas of communication;
• The main functional types of monological and dialogical statements, the structure of oral and written texts;
• The history of the development of Polish statehood, the characteristics of social, political and economic life, the cultural realities of the country.

Skills development:

• To comprehend the authentic speech of various communicative-situational and modal-pragmatic varieties;
• To generate oral (dialogic and monologic) statements in accordance with the system, norm and usage of Polish;
• To  communicate confidently within the framework of subject-specific modules provided  by the programme;
• To translate authentic texts of socio-cultural subjects.
